The Upper Cumberland Development District/Area Agency on Aging and Disability has an opening for a Tennessee State Health Insurance Assistance Program (TN SHIP) Medicare Counselor. The TN SHIP Medicare Counselor serves as a reliable, compassionate source of information for Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers. Operating within a fast-paced, collaborative team environment, this role ensures our community members understand their benefits while actively expanding our outreach footprint across the region.
Duties include:
- Work one-on-one with new and long-time beneficiaries to explain coverage, screen for extra help, and see applications through to completion.
- Take the lead on program media engagement.
- Assist with outreach to hard-to-reach populations, provide education on Medicare preventative services, and help secure new community partnerships.
- Monitor the SHIP Call Log, serve as the primary point of contact for adding new referrals, and proactively manage incoming client requests. Collaborate with Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) staff regarding health insurance fraud issues.
- Provide high-volume, critical support during the fall Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), the program’s busiest time of the year, ensuring timely counseling and plan comparisons for a high volume of beneficiaries.
- Complete timely data entry, manage referrals, maintain certifications, and assist the Program Manager with training materials and quality assurance checks.
- Participate in staff meetings and training events.
Requirements include:
- Proficient computer skills; working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Google Workspace is preferred.
- Excellent verbal communication, multitasking, and organizational skills. Experience with public speaking and outreach, with the ability to conduct training sessions and workshops.
- Prior knowledge of government benefits (e.g., Medicare, TennCare, Social Security) is preferred.
Education, Experience, & Requirements
- Background in a related field is ideal, with a high school diploma and three (3) years of experience or a college degree.
- Must successfully pass a background check and stay up to date with all Level III SHIP Counselor requirements and certifications.
