Position: Transportation Planner/RPO Coordinator

Location:  Cookeville

Job Description: The Upper Cumberland Development District has an opening for a Transportation Planner/RPO Coordinator. The Transportation Planner will assist local governments in the planning and administration of transportation-related projects with the goal of promoting responsible growth and enhancing communities in the Upper Cumberland region. The Center Hill RPO includes Cannon, Cumberland, DeKalb, Putnam, Van Buren, Warren, and White counties. The RPO’s purpose is to facilitate input from rural counties to TDOT for transportation planning. The RPO works with TDOT to identify the Upper Cumberland region’s needs regarding highways, transit, bike/pedestrian issues, aviation, and waterways. A bachelor’s degree is required.

Duties:

  • Serve as a liaison for receiving and providing input on multi-modal transportation needs for the area
  • Work with local elected officials to create strategic and comprehensive plans for future projects
  • Maintain working knowledge of communities’ needs, potential projects, and funding sources
  • Research, develop, and submit grant applications to private and government funding agencies
  • Coordinate with and obtain the support of partner agencies in the development of projects
  • Administer funded grant projects in accordance with funding agency guidelines
  • Conduct public meetings and regular communication with grantee representatives
  • Publicize and facilitate regular and special RPO meetings
  • Present updates and information to community groups and elected officials, as requested
  • Assist in the training and instruction of new staff members
  • Travel within the Upper Cumberland region

  • Excels in writing and editing, attention to detail, time management, and multi-tasking
  • Able to apply critical and strategic thinking to problem-solving
  • Able to independently manage daily workload and meet short and long-term deadlines
  • Able to work successfully on both self-directed projects and in a collaborative setting
  • Able to effectively speak to groups and facilitate public meetings
  • Proficient in standard business software
