Upper Cumberland Development District has an opening for a Solid Waste Planner. The Solid Waste Planner will provide solid waste services to cities and counties located in the Upper Cumberland Development District (UCDD) as per direction of the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC)

Duties include:

  • Assist in preparation and in submitting Annual Progress Reports (APRs) for each county annually.
  • Serve as solid waste consultant to assist cities and counties regarding all matters of solid waste.
  • Provide Technical Assistance to cities and counties in researching, writing and submitting solid waste grants as needed.
  • Compile statistical information to complete county and regional Needs Assessments.
  • Communicate effectively with staff and the public.
  • Prepare Solid Waste Quarterly Reports for TDEC and submit by deadlines.
  • Compile necessary information in preparation of reports including key outlines, narratives and tables; proofread documents for accuracy; and prepare for final presentation or submission.
  • Make logistical arrangements for meetings and training.

Qualifications:

  • Possess good oral and written communication skills with basic knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and number style.
  • Ability to read and follow written and verbal directions.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member.
  • Experience working with state/federal government programs.
  • Working knowledge of the impact garbage has on the environment and the importance of following best practices of waste management.
  • Ability to research solid waste databases and reports. Experience in compiling relevant information for solid waste and/or public works directors in the region.

The successful applicant will possess a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science or a comparable degree and/or experience as well as a minimum of one year of experience in the solid waste field. SWANA Certification is preferred.
